One way to help your search engine rankings are links. Some people get confused when they here this and think that just going out and getting as many links as possible is good. This could actually hurt your rankings.

It is important that you only exchange links with good quality sites and relevant ones as well. It is also important that you try and make your backlinks look as natural as possible. By this I mean don't just go out and get all reciprocal links, you need to go out and get some one way links as well. By this I mean find some sites that will link to yours without you having to link back to them. You can find some directories that you can get some one way links from like US Real Estate Directory and US Real Estate Agents You can also check out Ken's blog where he has written about some good directories to get some links from.

I registered on active rain a few weeks ago and if nothing else it's good for a backlink or two. I've also set up accounts on yahoo360, myspace, etc... basically anyplace that I can collect some free links. I do however actually visit all of the message boards that I sign up for and read the post to look for ideas that I may not already be using. It's funny that I see many of the same people in all of the forums I visit.

Yes you will definitely see the same people in most of the forums. Some times I wonder where everyone gets the time Smile I know I wish I had more of it. Active Rain, Myspace.. ect. are great places to get a few links from.

Wonderful post, Gary!

Do to you think it will hurt my site if I submit to a lot of directories (not reciprocal links)?

And do you buy links? I am thinking of buying a PR6 link just to boost my site's PR.

Haley,
If you are going to pay for links from directories the best ones to get are from industry related directories. I'm not just saying that because I own a few, one way links that point at your site have more weight to them if the are coming from a site that has to do with yours. If you just submit to just a regular directory that has all categories, even if you put your link in the real estate section that site has links from all different types of sites.

You can check out my 3 real estate related directories:

Thank you so much for your fast response Gary.

I visited all your links. I checked your pricing and I can say that it's pretty good. I might submit my site to www.us-realestateagents.com/ within a day or two.

Again, thank you!

As an seo expert with over 12 years experience I come across this misconception alot. Links to your website from third party sites do not actually hurt you. They used to but all the major search engines caught on to competitors trying to harm websites so that whole thing stopped.

When linking you just want to do your best to follow certain rules. This includes using various "anchor text" when requesting links. Or post them on your link to us page with copy/paste codes. Anchor text is the text that you see that is clickable. For example:

Quote:
<a href="http://www.equitybegone.com">free foreclosure listings</a> for buyers and sellers.

With the above code the anchor text is "free foreclosure listings" because it is between the <a> tags. Using different anchor texts allows you to gain rankings for different keywords or phrases. It also makes it look like the links are obtained naturally by being an authority rather than asking people to link to you that way.

Piggy backing on what equitybegone was saying it is also a good idea to change your anchor text by using common modifiers. That even helps it look more natural.

SEO is a real problem this days for 2 reasons:

1. Everyone thinks they can do SEO.
2. Everyone wants SEO.

So, there's people posting on every blog and forum on the internet, placing no follow links on PR0 websites. Is like spam.

Then, there are the websites with 0 content ranked on 5 up. This also upsets me. I'm looking for information and what I find is NOTHING ... oh! but they have done SEO and they are on a position they don't deserve!

Rachel, don't get caught up with other websites PR. Sure it is nice to look at but there is more to SEO than a high PR. Research your market a little, see who is linking to your competitor top sites, add fresh and unique content to your website on a regular basis, and above all BE PATIENT. It takes time.

Search engines can be frustrating... I have been building my site up for the past few months, consistently, and was making great progress. I went from not being anywhere in Google to being in the top 60. All of a sudden Google booted me to the 200's. Who knows why at this point. It is VERY frustrating and time consuming.

Rachel,
I agree with Jason don't get caught up with other websites PR. I lost some PR awhile ago and nothing happen to my rankings for my directory. It ranks on Google #5 for the term Real Estate Agents out of 69,600,000 sites, with only a PR2.

Although I am working on getting some PR back I would not spend too much time chasing PR.
