Just wanted to point out that activerain uses the rel="nofollow" tag attribute on all urls when you contribute, there by telling all the search engines don't count this link, the link is meaningless, and don't count it in your results.
So, most people that are not highly techinical would not know this. But active rain is no help for people trying to build back links to your site. The site might be good for other reasons, but not back links to your web site.

Stuart,
How technical are you? I just checked their blog post and the links are good. I checked a profile page and the same the links are good. There are some no follow tags, but they are on some links that are internal links. Can you point out where I can see what you are talking about?

Hi Gary...Sure, I can explain with examples. What I am referring to is when you add a comment in activerain and put a hyperlink in the comment, active rain puts the rel="nofollow" attribute in the source code. This is comments with urls, or hyperlinks in them.
Here is an example:
http://activerain.com/blogsview/48445/The-Best-Way-to
When you get to this page, take a look at your comment dated 04/05/07 to Karen. It starts like:
"Karen - Great post about linking. One Way links...."
Now let's examine your comment, inside the source code.
1 - Go "View Source" on the page to bring the html version and look at the source code. Your comment is about half way down in the source code.
2 - Do a Ctrl+F which is Find on this page, and put in "Great post about linking.", without the quotes. Once you find your comment in the source code we can look at each link.
3 - In your comment, you put 15 links to external pages. For instance the first one is: <a href="http://www.us-realestatedirectory.com" title="Real Estate" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Real Estate</a>
4 - Activerain puts the rel="nofollow" attribute inside all 15 of the anchor tags that you added to your comment post.
So while the link works to a human reader, activerain added the nofollow to exclude the search engines from counting this as a true link. Meaning you get no page rank help and no valid back links from any of those 15 links. Therefore, this link provide no help what so ever from a SEO, Search Engine Optimization stand point.
In a nut shell, these links are blocked from seach engine spiders. Activerain blocks the spiders with rel="nofollow".
I hope that helps everyone. If that does not make sense, just let me know.
Activerain is great in other areas, but they are a big SEO negative regarding hyperlinks in comments.
Best Regards, Stuart |

| I didn't know you were talking about comments. This is probably a good thing. Helps get rid of the comment spam. If you actually participate with the site, set up an account and write blog post, your profile links are good and also your blog post links are good. |

The links added to the comments are subject to the no follow but the signature link for those who are logged in count as a backlink from the post being commented on to the AR blog of the commentor.
