Alaska was admitted into the United States on January 3, 1959. The state of Alaska also known as The Last Frontier covers an area of 656,425 sq. miles. The Alaska state bird is the Willow Ptarmigan and the state flower is the alpine forget-me-not. Alaska consists of 25 counties with it's largest cities being Anchorage, Barrow, Bethel, Fairbanks, Juneau, Ketchikan, Kenai, Kodiak, Sitka and Wasilla. The state capital is Juneau. The estimate Population in 2004 was 655,435 up 4.5% from 2000.
